Freeware Network Inventory Tool

Spotted this over at Lockergnome today, a program called Steel Inventory that gives you a snap shot of the current configuration of every PC on your network, and can alert you if anything changes, including newly installed software.

I’m not in a Sys Admin position now, so I can’t really put this through it’s paces, but back when I was working as a one-man shop it would have been great to have some tool that kept an eye on software being installed all across the network. Let’s face it, you can’t always just lock down all your users, so it’d be nice to have a tool to keep an eye on them.
Has anyone out there played with Steel Inventory before? Anyone want to and provide the rest of us with your feedback?

I played with Steel Inventory after seeing this post. It seems quite interesting, but I doubt it will replace Spiceworks Desktop which I’m using right now.

Do report back what you think of it. That is if you (or anyone else) decides to test it.
