OpenDNS
As we all know we like to use human friendly names on the Internet to get around. www.friendsintech.com for instance. Today I came home and none of my systems could get to the Internet. After a bit of troubleshooting it turned out to be DNS (Domain Name System) resolution. Comcast’s DNS servers were not working well today.
Bring in OpenDNS. This is a free service for providing those human friendly names. No matter how you are setup for the Internet be it by pc directly, router etc they have instructions on how to use their service. Just go to their main page www.opendns.com click the Getting Started in the middle. Look to the right side and you will find links to whatever type of system you have and you will get nice instructions on setting up your system to use the new name servers.
Two added bonuses. OpenDNS does some basic filtering on known bad Internet sites. If your pc tries to go to a known malicious site it will reroute you to a block page. They also route you to the right sites for a lot of popular typos of web site names. This helps cut down on the chance you will go to a site you did not mean yourself or your kids to see.
