CCleaner to the rescue

A few weeks ago I had a need to uninstall some software from my XP laptop at work. I did the usual START / Settings / Control Panel / Add and Remove Programs, but it simply wouldn’t populate the list of applications no matter how long I waited.

I REALLY didn’t want to reimage my machine just because of this one glitch — let me rephrase that… I was NOT going to reimage my machine because of this one glitch! But I still needed to get a certain application uninstalled and I also didn’t want to have to manually uninstall it.

I dug around on Microsoft’s site looking for a KB article on the issue, but nothing I found offered any relief. Then I came upon CCleaner.

Not only am I able to uninstall my apps now, I can do so many other things, like… clear temporary files, URL history, cookies from IE, Firefox or Opera, but also clean out the Recycle Bin, MRU lists, temp files, and clean up the registry.

A very handy tool… and best of all, it’s freeware!

I have been using this product for a couple of years. It is amazing as to the amount of trash there is prior to using this program. I use this program and Dial a Fix Software for repairing Windows Update Errors.

…..George Starcher turned me onto CCleaner a while back. It’s outstanding! It even has some simple cookie management. You can select certain cookies that don’t get deleted. Handy for those newspaper logon cookies, and the like. It’s a very lightweight anonymity tool, too. Close browser, run CCleaner, restart browser. Tracking cookies are gone.

I’ve been using CCleaner for a couple of years now, and also reccomend it to others on my own website too.

I run a ’selected’ free software website called lessfuss, so am often installing and uninstalling programs for testing purposes which can eventually slow up your system and make a right muddle of your registry!
But, since using CCleaner I havn’t had to re-install my OS since late 2006.

Obviously you need to have a reasonably good maintenance schedule including disk integrity scans, defragging the drives aswell as running CCleaner. But, it’s a very reliable program, and does a grand job of registry cleaning - aswell as already stated above - a good file clean up and privacy tool too!

    I highly recommend it! Andy.
